AMHERST, Mass. - Freshman Stephanie Santos (Ludlow, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime to lift the University of Massachusetts to a 1-0 victory over St. Joseph's tonight in women's soccer action.
In the 110th minute of play, senior Alexi Rudd (Orinda, Calif.) received a pass at the midfield line and sent freshman Erica Wideberg (Randolf, N.J.) up the left hand side of the field. Wideberg drew two defenders then crossed the ball with her left foot to Santos who scored from just inside the penalty area.
UMass senior goaltender Julie Podhrasky (Dallas, Texas) had seven saves in the game for UMass, while St. Joseph's goaltender Christy Gane made 10 saves in the losing cause. The victory improves UMass to 9-2 overall and 6-0 in the Atlantic 10, while the loss drops St. Joseph's to 4-5-2 overall and 1-2-2 in the A-10.
The Minutewomen return to action Sunday, Oct. 21, when they take on Temple at 1:00 p.m. in Philadelphia.
