AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women's soccer team defeated Duquesne, 7-0, this afternoon at Totman field. With the victory, the Minutewomen improve to 8-2 overall and 5-0 in the Atlantic 10.

The Minutewomen struck early when senior Kathleen Machamer (Highland Ranch, Colo.) scored a goal off a pass from senior Brooke Bartlett (Clifton Park, N.Y.) at the two minute mark. Machamer later chipped in two more goals during the second half for a hat trick. Machamer has scored a total of nine points in the past two games, bringing her season total to 14 on four goals and six assists.

UMass extended the lead when junior Martha Conover (Liverpool, N.Y.) set up sophomore Michelle Luttati (Westford, Mass.) on a corner kick. Conover placed the ball in front of the net and Luttati headed it in for her fifth goal of the season.

Machamer spurred the second half scoring spree, when she scored on a header from Bartlett and junior Alexi Rudd (Orinda, Calif.) just three minutes into the half. At the 56 minute mark, freshman Stephanie Santos (Ludlow, Mass.) notched her sixth goal of the season, bringing her season point total to a team high 14. Sophomore Janelle Khouri (Calgary, Alberta) and Bartlett were credited with the assists. Bartlett finished the game with three assists.

Scoring next for UMass was Machamer at the 61 minute mark. The goal was assisted by freshman Carly Turman (Pleasant Hill, Calif.). Senior Katelyn Jones (Round Lake, N.Y.) struck next for the Minutewomen, when she scored on a header. Khouri and Conover were credited with the assists. Sophomore wrapped up the scoring with a goal in the 87th minute. Junior Andrea Trujillo (Englewood, Colo.) and Khouri assisted on the play. The assist by Khouri marked her third of the game.

UMass goaltender senior Kelly Nigh (Seattle, Wash.) was credited with the shutout. Duquesne goaltender junior Kristin Scharphorn had seven saves in the losing effort.

The Minutewomen return to action on Oct. 19, when they take on St. Joseph's at 3:30 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
