Hockey Falls to Providence, 8-5

Amherst, Mass. -- Junior Drew Omicioli scored two goals and two assists as Providence College defeated the University of Massachusetts, 8-5, in college hockey action Sunday night at the Mullins Center.

UMass scored four goals in the first period, with the first coming on the power play at 7:33 as sophomore Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) scored his 11th of the year with assists from senior Jeff Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) and junior Martin Miljko (Etobicoke, Ontario).

Senior Kris Wallis (Agassiz, British Columbia) scored the next two goals for the Minutemen with his first coming at 9:38 of the first with assists from senior Toni S?derholm (Helsinki, Finland) and sophomore Brad Nizwantowski (Peabody, Mass.). UMass' third goal and Wallis' second, came at 14:30 of the opening period with sophomore Jimmy Callahan (Lexington, Mass.) and Nizwantowski assisting on the goal.

Freshman Scott Horvath (West Redding, Conn.) scored his fourth of the season at 15:16 of the first with assists from senior R.J Gates (Plainville, Conn.) and sophomore J.R. Zavisza (Suffield, Conn.) to give the Minutemen a 4-0 lead.

Providence scored six straight goals to take a 6-4 lead after two periods. The Friars scored two short handed goals and two power play goals on the night.

Senior goaltender Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland) replaced junior Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) and made 10 saves in 36 minutes of play while Johnson made six saves in 23 minutes. Friars' goalie Boyd Ballard made five saves on nine shots before being replaced by Nolan Shaefer who made 18 saves in 44 minutes of play.

With the loss, UMass falls to 5-13-2 overall and 4-6-0 in Hockey East, while the Friars improve to 11-5-3 overall and 7-3-1 in Hockey East with the win.

The Minutemen return to action Friday, Jan. 12, when they travel to take on Northeastern at 7:00 p.m. The two teams will meet again at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Mullins Center.
