Hockey Forces Tie With Northeastern, 2-2

AMHERST, Mass. -- Junior goaltender Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) made 33 saves as the University of Massachusetts tied Northeastern, 2-2, in Hockey East action at the Mullins Center.
The Minutemen got on the board first when sophomore Brad Nizwantowski (Peabody, Mass.) beat Husky goalie Mike Gilhooly for his fourth goal of the year. Senior assistant captains Jay Shaw (Cranston, R.I.) and Kris Wallis (Agassiz, British Columbia) assisted on the play at the 5:25 mark of the first period. Shaw and Nizwantowski each tallied two points on the night.
In the second period, Northeastern scored two goals to take a 2-1 lead into the second intermission. Joe Mastronardi and Kevin Welch each recorded a score for the Huskies.
The Minutemen outshot Northeastern by a 12 to four margin in the third period. UMass also hit three posts in the period adding to the two posts the Minutemen hit in the second period. Just over 12 minutes into the third, Shaw beat Gilhooly with a backhand shot from the right side of the net to tie the game. It was Shaw's second goal of the year.
In overtime, UMass held a five to four advantage in shots, but junior Mike Johnson made a big glove save to keep the score tied. Johnson finished the night with 33 saves, while Gilhooly ended the night with 35.
With the tie, the Minutemen are now 7-16-3 season and 3-9-1 in Hockey East, while Northeastern is now 10-10-4 overall and 5-7-4 in Hockey East.
The Minutemen return to action Friday February 2, when they travel to Boston University for a Hockey East contest. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
