AMHERST, Mass. - La Salle guard Suzanne Keilty scored 16 points as the Explorers defeated the University of Massachusetts, 74-51, in Atlantic 10 Conference women's basketball action tonight at the Mullins Center. The loss drops UMass to 8-10 overall and 3-4 in the A-10, while La Salle upped its record to 10-7 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
After a sluggish start that saw UMass score only six points in the first 10 minutes of the game, the Minutewomen responded with an 18-11 run that cut the deficit to five at halftime (29-24). But La Salle, who shot 51.2% from the field in the game, slowly pulled away in the second half for the double digit victory. The Explorers also turned 15 UMass turnovers into 18 points on the offensive end. The Minutewomen were again hurt by poor shooting, as they conmnected on only 19 of their 64 field goal attempts (29.7%).
Kathy Coyner (Belpre, Ohio) was the only UMass player in double figures as she scored 19 points, 11 of which came in the second half. Jennifer Butler (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Siiri Liivandi (Rapla, Estonia) each added eight points for the Minutewomen. Butler also grabbed seven rebounds.
Jen Zenszer and Marjorie Rhoads each added 14 points for La Salle.
UMass returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 28, as they host Fordham at the Mullins Center. The game is set to tip-off at 2:00 p.m.
