AMHERST, Mass. - Two quick goals by Georgia's Nicole Greathead and Ashley King gave UG (4-1) a lead it wouldn't relinquish as the Bulldogs went on to beat UMass (2-2) 3-1 Friday afternoon in game two of the UMass Women's Soccer Classic. Long Island (1-4) won game one of the Classic, beating Fairfield (0-3-2) 4-3.
Greathead scored an unassisted goal just 1:04 into the game and King followed that up 3:17 later with a goal off a cross by Shannon Murray.
UMass junior forward Brooke Bartlett (Clifton Park, N.Y.) cut Georgia's lead in half with a goal at 13:06 off a pass by junior defender Sarah Cook (Cincinnati, Ohio), but that was all Georgia would allow as it held the Mintuewomen to just five shots on goal. Jessica Winton scored at 64:56 for the Bulldogs final goal of the game.
Junior goalkeeper Julie Podhrasky (Dallas, Texas) recorded three saves for UMass while Georgia's keeper Nicole Williams had two.
The Classic continues Sunday (Sept. 10) at Totman Field with Georgia and Fairfield playing at noon followed by UMass and Long Island at 2:00 p.m.
