DAYTON, Ohio. - Dayton right fielder Brent Berigan hit a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning off UMass reliever Nick Skirkanich (Chesire, Conn.), knocking in the go-ahead and giving the Flyers a 4-3 win over the Minutemen on Monday afternoon in A-10 baseball action. The Minutemen drop to 10-9 overall and 2-1 in the Atlantic 10. The Flyers improve to 8-18 overall and 3-3 in the conference with the losses.

Dayton grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first but UMass tied the game in the top of the fourth. Sophomore Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.) hit his sixth double of the season and later scored on a single by senior Kevin O'Connell (Hartland, Vt.), knotting the game at one apiece after four innings.

UMass built a 3-2 lead with one run in both the sixth and seventh innings. Junior Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) led off the sixth with a walk and would later score on a sacrifice fly to center field by O'Connell. Sophomore Scott Anderson (Easton, Conn.) singled to left-center to lead off the seventh and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Dayton pitcher. Gavin Clark's (Springfield, Mass.) sharp grounder to second base scored Anderson, putting the Minutemen up by one going into the eighth inning.

After two singles and a walk in the eighth, UMass starter Craig Szado (Monson, Mass.) was relieved by Skirkanich with two outs. Berigan promptly singled to center, scoring Dan Hoying from second base for the winning run.

Szado took the loss for the Minutemen, giving up four runs and striking out seven batters in 7 2/3 innings pitched. Kasey Rosendahl picked up the win, going the distance and allowing eight hits while striking out six UMass batters.

The Minutemen will return to action in New Britain, Conn. on Wednesday to take on Central Connecticut in a single nine-inning game. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
