KINGSTON, R.I. - Senior Travis Veracka (Stow, Mass.) and junior Craig Szado (Monson, Mass.) both pitched complete games as UMass picked up a pair of 3-1 decisions over URI at Bill Beck Field. The Minutemen improved to 20-15-1, 8-5-1 in the Atlantic 10. The Rams now stand at 20-21-1 overall, 4-10 in the conference.

UMass struck first in the top of the third with an RBI single by junior Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.), scoring senior Shaun Skeffington (Fall River, Mass.). The Rams tied the game at one apiece in the bottom of the third, using two UMass errors to score their only run of the game. Gorneault broke the tie in the top of the seventh inning with his sixth home run of the season, a two-run blast over the left field wall.

Veracka scattered four hits over seven innings for his sixth straight complete game of the season, while striking out six and walking just one batter. Mike Martone took the loss for the Rams, allowing two runs on two hits.

The Minutemen jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning of play in the second game and never looked back. RBI singles by sophomore Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.) and senior Kevin O'Connell (Hartland, Vt.) gave the Minutemen all the offense they would need behind another strong pitching performance by Szado.

Szado gave up one earned run on seven hits while striking out five and walking two, improving to 3-3 on the year. Peter Kehoe took the loss for the Rams, dropping to 4-2 on the year.

UMass will face URI tomorrow at noon for the series finale at Bill Beck Field.
