BOSTON, Mass. -- Freshman first baseman Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.) went three for four with two home runs and five runs batted in, to lead the University of Massachusetts baseball team to a 13-8 victory over Northeastern in the championship game of the Beanpot Baseball Classic at Fenway Park. The Minutemen improve their all-time record in the Beanpot to 8-1, with three outright championships and one shared title in the last five years. The Minutemen opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore catcher Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.) had an RBI single to drive in the first run, then senior designated hitter Kevin O'Connell (Hartland, Vt.) belted a two-run homer over the Green Monster in left field. UMass added a single run in the fourth on an RBI sacrifice bunt by freshman shortstop Matt Boulanger (Westfield, Mass.), before busting the game wide open with eight runs in the top of the fifth inning. Altieri had the biggest hit of the inning with a grand slam home run which cleared the netting beyond the Green Monster. Senior outfielder Steve Asadoorian (Whitinsville, Mass.) added a two-run double in the inning, while junior outfielder Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) had an RBI double and O'Connell hit an RBI single.
Northeastern scored its first two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, on an RBI double by first baseman Matt Keating and an RBI groundout from third baseman Michael Lomuscio. Altieri then drove in the final UMass run in the top of the seventh, with a solo homer over the Green Monster. The Huskies added a single runs in both the seventh and eighth, before a grand slam by outfielder Ben Beck concluded the scoring in the ninth.
O'Connell went two for three on the day with three runs batted in, while Morgan was two for five with one RBI. Northeastern was led by Beck, who went two for five with the grand slam.
