NEW HAVEN, Conn.. - Senior captain Shaun Skeffington (Fall River, Mass.) went four for seven on the day, leading UMass to a doubleheader sweep of Yale on Saturday afternoon. The Minutemen won their seventh and eighth straight games, improving to 8-6 on the year. TheBulldogs drop to 5-14 on the season with the losses.
Senior Travis Veracka (Stow, Mass.) pitched a complete game three-hit shutout in the opener, striking out six and walking one on route to his first win of the season. Sophomore Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.) drove in two runs in the top of the first with a two-out triple to center field, putting the Minutemen ahead 3-0 after one.
UMass added another run in the second and three more in the third inning. With the bases loaded with one out in the third, sophomore John Seed (New Bedford, Mass.) singled to left center, bringing home Senez and Gavin Clark (Springfield, Mass.) to put the Minutemen up 6-0. Skeffington followed with a single to center, bringing in sophomore Scott Anderson (Easton, Conn.), for the seventh UMass run.
Veracka cruised the rest of the way, retiring nine straight at one point, improving to 1-1 on the season. Matt McCarthy took the loss for Yale, giving up seven runs on eleven hits, dropping to 2-3 on the year.
In the second game, UMass came back from a 2-0 deficit with four consecutive singles and a Bulldog wild pitch for a three-run fifth inning to go ahead 3-2 after five. Junior Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) and sophomore Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.) both hit RBI singles in the fifth before Gorneault advanced home on a wild pitch.
The Bulldogs tied the game at three with an unearned run off UMass starter Jesse Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.).
Skeffington scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning on a wild pitch by Doug Feller after hitting a single to lead off the seventh.
Senior southpaw Todd Samolewicz (Florence, Mass.) picked up his second win in relief of Santos, improving to 2-0 on the season. Junior Nick Skirkanich (Chesire, Conn.) retired the side in order in the seventh to pick up his first save of the year. Feller took the loss, dropping to 0-2 this season.
