EAST HARTFORD, Conn.. - Junior left-hander Craig Szado (Monson, Mass.) threw six strong innings, striking out seven and allowing just one run, but the UMass bullpen couldn't keep the lead, dropping a 10-6 contest to the Hartford Hawks on Tuesday. UMass dropped to 8-7 on the season with the loss, while the Hawks improved to 6-8 with the win.

UMass jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after one inning of play after a three-run home run by Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.). The sophomore catcher drove in sophomore Scott Anderson (Easton, Conn.) and junior Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) with his second blast of the season.

Szado cruised through five innings, not giving up an earned run until the bottom of the sixth. UMass scored one run in the fourth on a solo shot by senior Kevin O'Connell (Hartland, Vt.) and another solo shot by sophomore Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.) put the Minutemen up 6-2 after six innings of play.

After UMass reliever David Williamson (Manchester, N.H.) walked the first two Hartford hitters and gave up an RBI single, freshman Paul Washenko (Orange, Conn.) replaced Williamson and promptly gave up a single to load the bases. Hartford pitcher John Orefice followed with a grand slam home run, putting the Hawks up 7-6 after seven innings.

The Hawks tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, and went on to win 10-6. Washenko took the loss for the Minutemen, dropping his first decision of the season. Orefice picked up the win in relief, pitching 2 1/3 innings of no-hit ball, improving to 1-0 on the season.

UMass is back in action again tomorrow afternoon in Storrs, Conn., taking on the Huskies of UConn at 3:00 p.m. -UM-
