SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The University of San Francisco broke a school record with 12 three-pointers and pulled away in the second half for an 80-37 victory over the University of Massachusetts in women's basketball action tonight at War Memorial Gym. The loss drops the Minutewomen to 3-2 overall, while San Francisco improved to 3-1.
The Minutewomen, who only shot 21.4% from the field and committed 27 turnovers, were led by sophomore forward Jennifer Butler's (Brooklyn, N.Y.) six points and eight rebounds. Fellow sophomore Siiri Liivandi (Rapla, Estonia) came off the bench to grab a team-high nine rebounds to go along with three points.
San Francisco used a 22-7 run to close out the first half and took a 32-17 lead into the locker room. The Lady Dons were 8-for-18 from the three point arc in the opening stanza, including three from forward Melanie Turner. The Dons kept the pressure on in their 2-1-2 halfcourt zone defense to open the second half, and at the same time dashed all hopes of a UMass comeback by scoring 27 of the first 31 points of the second frame to go up 60-21 with 10:05 left in the game.
San Francisco's balanced attack was led by Turner's 13 points and Molly Shanley's 12.
UMass will close out their weekend trip to California on Sunday afternoon as they take on national power Stanford at 4:00 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on Fox Sports New England.
