AMHERST, Mass. -- Senior Kristen Schmidt (Greenfield, Mass.) scored three goals to lead the University of Massachusetts to a 3-0 victory over Temple in the 2000 Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship earlier today at Garber Field.

The victory marks the fifth straight A-10 championship for the Minutewomen who earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament with the win. UMass will be making its fifth straight NCAA appearance, and its 18th in the last 20 years.

After a scoreless first half, Schmidt put the Minutewomen on the board when she received a cross from sophomore Sarah Bohonowicz (South Derrfield, Mass.) just two minutes into the second half. Schmidt scored again just five minutes later as she redirected a pass from junior Lindsay Abbott (Northampton, Mass.) to give UMass a 2-0 lead. Schmidt completed the hat trick with 7:24 left in regulation off a penalty corner from seniors Patty Robinson (Norwood, Mass) and Lucy Koch (Ipswich, Mass.).

Schmidt tied an A-10 Championship weekend record for most goals, finishing the tournament with four goals.

Senior goaltender Zowie Tucker (Neath, South Wales) made seven saves in the UMass cage for her 11th shutout of the season, while Temple goaltender Serene McGrath (Cinnaminson, N.J.) made six saves in the loss. With her shutouts today and Saturday against West Chester, Tucker tied the A-10 Championship record for most shutouts during the weekend.

The victory was the ninth straight and improves UMass to 18-3 overall on the year, while Temple finishes the season with an 11-11 record.
