Field Hockey Defeats Boston University, 2-1, in the First Round of the NCAA Championship.

Chapel Hill, N.C. - Senior Kristen Schmidt (Greenfield, Mass.) scored with just five minutes left as the University of Massachusetts field hockey team defeated Boston University, 2-1, in the first round of the NCAA Championship Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Minutewomen will face No. 3 North Carolina in the second round of the Championship, Sunday, Nov. 12, at 2:00 p.m.
Schmidt scored off a penalty corner with assists from Patty Robinson (Norwood, Mass.) and Lucy Koch (Ipswich, Mass). The goal was Schmidt's 13th of the year and her sixth game-winner.
"We dominated the game, we just made a lot of mental mistakes," said head coach Patty Shea. "We just kept on working hard and we were fortunate to come out on top."
Junior Lindsay Abbott (Northampton, Mass.) scored at 26:22 in the second half to tie the game at 1-1. The goal was Abbott's eighth of the year
The Terriers jumped onto the board first when they intercepted a pass deep in the UMass zone and freshman Christina Strauss put it past UMass goalie Zowie Tucker (Neath, South Wales).
Tucker made five saves for the Minutewomen, while Susan Harrington made four saves for the Terriers.
Robinson's assist gives her 49 in her career and just one away form tying UMass' all-time mark of 50.
The Minutewomen have won 10 straight while outscoring their opponents 23-3. UMass has 2-7-1 all-time record against the Tar Heels of North Carolina.
