Women's Basketball Downs Holy Cross in Overtime, 62-57

AMHERST, Mass. - Point guard Kathy Coyner (Belpre, Ohio) scored a team-high 19 points, including 3-for-5 from the three point line, as the University of Massachusetts defeated intra-state rival Holy Cross in overtime, 62-57, in women's basketball action today at the Mullins Center. The win improved UMass to 2-1 on the season, while Holy Cross fell to 1-3.
Jennifer Butler (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Caroline Nehls (Randolph, N.J.) each posted double-doubles on the afternoon, helping the Minutewomen win the rebounding battle, 53-34. Butler, who fouled out with 1.9 seconds remaining in the second half, finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Nehls, who was 8-for-12 from the floor, recorded 16 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
With 1:27 left in regulation, Holy Cross forward Monika Rothemich sank one of two free throws to put the Crusaders up 50-48. But Coyner, who scored 14 of her 19 points after intermission, drilled a three-pointer with 42 seconds remaining and followed that with two free throws to put the Minutewomen up 53-50 with 15 seconds to go.
However Holy Cross guard Jeanette Paukert, who finished with a game-high 23 points, was then fouled by Butler while attempting a three-pointer with only 1.9 seconds remaining. After a timeout, Paukert sank all three free throws to force overtime. On the day, Paukert was 8-for-15 from the floor, including 4-for-8 from three-point land.
The Minutewomen return to action at the Mullins Center on Tuesday, November 28, as they host Ivy League foe Dartmouth. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
