BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Vermont sophomore J.F. Gamelin scored the game-winner goal at the 9:28 mark of the third period as Vermont defeated the University of Massachusetts, 5-3, in non-conference college hockey action tonight at Gutterson Field House.

The Catamounts opened the scoring just 1:52 into the game when freshman Oriel McHugh fired a shot that defelcted off a UMass defender and past Minuteman goaltender Murkus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland). Vermont extended its lead to 2-0 when junior Ryan Cox scored on a power play just over five minutes into the period. Seniors J.F. Caudron and Jerry Gernader assisted on the goal.

Following another Vermont power play goal to open the second period, senior Kris Wallis (Agassiz, British Columbia) got UMass on the scoreboard. He took a feed from sophomore Kelly Sickavish (North Vancouver, British Columbia) and fired a slapshot into the top corner. The Minutemen cut the lead to 3-2 when senior Jay Shaw (Cranston, R.I.) netted his first goal of the season. Wallis and freshman Scott Horvath (West Redding, Conn.) assisted on the goal.

UMass tied the game, 3-3, when sophomore Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich) scored from the slot on the power play five and a half minutes into the third period. Sophomore Samuli Jalkanen (Helsinki, Finland) and senior captain Jeff Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) assisted on the goal.
