Colorado College Skates Past #10 Massachusetts Hockey, 6-1

October 03, 2026 | Hockey

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – No. 10 University of Massachusetts hockey halved its deficit early in the second period, but Colorado College went on to score four unanswered to defeat the Minutemen, 6-1 at Ed Robson Arena on Saturday. The setback leaves UMass at 0-2-0, while the Tigers begin the year at 2-0-0.

"I think there was a big difference in the game—It was the goaltending of both teams," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "We're inconsistent right now, and I just said to the team, 'I don't really mind coming out here and getting humbled'. You know, we had a lot of talk about rankings and all this other stuff, and you know, we might have got away from ourselves a little bit. So we've been humbled, and we'll learn from it. The thing I liked in the second period, I could see us starting to play like UMass hockey for a stretch there, and then and then we give them a free goal, and that kind of took the wind out of our sails. But there were stretches. Scores weren't great, losing's not great, but I can see where we're going to get to."

With the first period winding down, Riley Stuart opened the scoring for Colorado College, collecting a pass from Ty Halaburda alone at the net front and shoveling a backhander off the shoulder of freshman Tobias Trejbal and in at 18:17.

Drew Montgomery doubled the Tigers' advantage at the 10:03 mark of the second, capitalizing on a puck handling miscue by Trejbal behind the net.

Freshman Egor Barabanov put UMass on the board 14:59 into the second, cleaning up a rebound from the slot off classmate Barrett Dexheimer's initial shot as the pair collected their first collegiate points. Junior Francesco Dell'Elce picked up the secondary on the play.

However, just 53 seconds later, Philippe Blais-Savoie put Colorado College up by two with a one-timer from the blueline off a feed from Carmelo Crandell and Mats Lindgren that chased Trejbal from the net.

The Minutemen appeared to have pulled back within one early in the third, but the Tigers successfully challenged and it was determined that freshman Max Curran had kicked in the puck.

That reversal sent the momentum back Colorado College's way as the Tigers put the game out of reach with goals by Bret Link (10:27) and Max Burkholder (11:28), while Connor Hvidston capped the scoring with a power-play goal at 16:54.

Colorado College ended the night with a 39-23 advantage in shots and went 1-for-4 on the power play, while UMass was 0-for-2. Trejbal totaled 17 saves in his debut for the Minutemen and Jackson Irving stopped 16. Jackson Unger finished with 22 saves for the Tigers.

UMass will be back in action next Friday, October 9, when the squad will open its home slate against RIT at the Mullins Center at 7:30 p.m.
