Hockey Falls To Rensselaer, 9-2

TROY, N.Y. -- Rensselaer scored six first period goals en route to an 9-2 win over the University of Massachusetts in non-conference college hockey action tonight at the Houston Field House.
The Engineers struck early and often in the first period. Matt Murley opened the scoring 2:17 into the game with his first of four goals in the period. Four of the six RPI goals were scored on the power play, including a pair of scores with a two-man advantage. Also scoring for the Engineers were Jim Vickers and Ryan Shields.
UMass senior goaltender Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland) started the game, but was pulled after allowing five goals on the first 13 shots. Junior Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) replaced Helanen at the 4:47 mark of the opening period and made five saves, while allowing one goal before the first intermission.
The Minutemen cut into the RPI lead with two goals in the second period. Sophomore J.R. Zavisza (Suffield, Conn.) netted his first career goal with assists going to sophomore Anthony Scaparotti (Medford, Mass.) and junior Jedd Crumb (Winnipeg, Manitoba). Junior Martin Miljko (Etobicoke, Ontario) netted the Minutemen's second goal of the game when he scored on the power play at the 10:48 mark of the second period. Sophomores Brad Nizwantowski (Peabody, Mass.) and Samuli Jalkanen (Helsinki, Finland) assisted on the goal.
RPI scored a single goal in the second period and added two more in the third to make the final 9-2. Johnson finished the game with 17 saves, while Helanen finished with 14. RPI goaltender Kevin Kurk finished with 16 saves.
The loss drops the Minutemen to 3-6-2 on the season, while the victory improves RPI to 4-3-0.
The Minutemen return to action Tuesday, Nov. 21, when they travel to Burlington, Vt. to face ECAC foe Vermont in a non-conference matchup. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
