AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts scored three first half goals en route to a 4-0 win over La Salle earlier today at Garber Field. The win clinched the 2000 Atlantic 10 regular season field hockey title for the Minutewomen.
Senior Tamra Geryk (Hatfield, Mass.) opened the scoring when she scored with 16:33 remaining in the first half. Senior Patty Robinson (Norwood, Mass.) assisted on the goal. UMass increased its lead to 2-0 on a goal by junior Anke Bruemmer (Koeln, Germany). Bruemmer scored on a penalty corner with assists going to junior Lindsay Abbott (Northampton, Mass.) and senior tri-captain Lucy Koch (Ipswich, Mass.).
The Minutewomen extended their lead to 3-0 when sophomore Sarah Bohonowicz (South Deerfield, Mass.) scored off a pass from Abbott.
Junior Kaitlyn Byron (Greenfield, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal at the 22:04 mark of the second half to give UMass a 4-0 lead. Senior goaltender Zowie Tucker (Neath, South Wales) made one save to record her ninth shutout of the season.
UMass finished the regular season with a 16-3 overall record and a 5-0 mark in the A-10. La Salle ends the season with a 3-14 record and was 1-4 in the A-10.
The Minutewomen return to action this weekend as they host the 2000 Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship on Nov. 4-5 at Garber Field. The top-seeded Minutewomen will play Saturday, Nov. 4, at 1:00 p.m. in the semifinals of the A-10 Championship.
