PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) - Shawnetta Stewart notched her 1,000th career point in scoring 15 Sunday to lift No. 12 Rutgers over the University of Massachusetts 66-52.

The Scarlet Knights (8-2) recorded their fifth straight win in a six-game homestand, despite strong first-half play by Massachusetts (4-8).

Massachusetts trailed by only two, 27-25, at intermission, but Rutgers opened the second half with a 15-4 run. Christina Fowler scored the run's first five points, and the Knights built a 42-29 lead with 12 minutes to play.

The Minutewomen never got closer than 10 the rest of the game.

Amber Sneed led Massachusetts with 15 points and Tonia Thomas added 11. It was the third straight game Massachusetts played without point guard Kathy Coyner, who is recovering from ankle surgery.

For Rutgers, Davalyn Cunningham had 12 points, Tasha Pointer had 11 and Linda Miles grabbed seven rebounds.

Rutgers built an early 15-7 lead on an 8-0 run, but the Minutewomen roared back with a 9-0 run to take a 16-15 lead.

After three ties and three lead changes over the next four minutes, Rutgers went up 27-25 on Dana Boonen's turnaround shot in the lane with 1:07 to go. UMass then missed two opportunities to tie on foul shots before the half ended.
