Women's Soccer Ties Syracuse In Double Overtime

AGAWAM, Mass. - Senior Robin Smith (Naperville, Ill.) scored a goal with less than ten minutes left in regulation to help lead UMass to a 2-2 double overtime tie with Syracuse in front of 1,416 fans at Agawam High School tonight. Sophomore goalie Cori Stevens (Greensboro, N.C.) made a career high 21 saves to help preserve the tie for UMass, but neither team could come up with a score in overtime to win the game. UMass stands at 1-0-1 on the season, while Syracuse is 0-2-1.

Syracuse scored early in the game, netting a goal at 3:04, when Jenna Szyluk, knocked in a shot from 10 yards, past a diving Stevens, to take a 1-0 lead. UMass tied it up when Emma Kurowski (Sutton,Mass.) connected on a great serve from junior Kate Webb (Westfield, Mass.) at 21:12. Syracuse netted another goal at 30:21, when Molly Schmelze fired a high arching shot from a nice feed from Candy Reich to take a 2-1 lead.

After 35 minutes of scoreless second half play, Smith launched a 35 foot rocket from junior Kara Green (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), that sailed high into the net to tie the game 2-2. Smith entered the game with eight minutes expired in the second half, sitting out the first half due to injury, Despite numerous opportunities for both teams in both overtime periods, neither team could finish the chances.

Stevens was outstanding for UMass, after struggling in the first half. She made ten saves in the second half and six in the overtime stanzas.

UMass will play host to the UMass Classic next weekend, taking on Alabama-Birmingham at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, September 10 and Texas Christian at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 12. UMass will be honoring current US goalie and former UMass great Briana Scurry at Friday?s contest.
