ALBANY, N.Y. - Sophomore Sarah Cook (Cincinnati, Ohio) exploded for five points on two goals and an assist, while senior Emma Kurowski (Sutton , Mass.) added two goals to lead the UMass Minutewomen soccer team to a 6-0 shutout victory over the University of Albany in the season opener for both teams. Junior Kara Green (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) tallied three assists on the day. UMass improves to 1-0 on the season, while Albany falls to 0-1 on the year. The Minutewomen dominated the game scoring all six goals in the first half, outshooting Albany 36-7 in the match. UMass held a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks.
UMass started off quickly as sophomore Katelyn Jones (Round Lake, NY) knocked in a cross from junior Kara Green at 5:59. Kurowski struck for her first goal one-timing a cross from freshmen Holly Wildenhaus (Centerville, Ohio) and Alexi Rudd (Orinda, Calif.) at 12:13. Kurowski tallied again in about 20 seconds, collecting a ball from Cook and Green at 12:32. Cook scored the first of her two goals on a header off a corner feed from Green at 31:44. She tallied again on a Jones cross on a corner at 34:10. Junior transfer Kara Ciocca (Wilbraham, Mass.) scored the final goal of the game for UMass, the first of her career in maroon and white at 36:20 on a long ball served by junior Kat Machamer (Englewood, Colo.).
Senior Angie Napoli (Longmeadow, Mass.) was untested in the net, facing only seven shots and only having to make one save on the afternoon.
UMass will face Syracuse, coached by former UMass great, April Kater on Saturday, Sept. 4 at Agawam High School at 7:00 p.m.
