Amherst, Mass. -
Jackie Moore, who has spent the last six seasons as Head Coach at Santa Fe Community College (Fla.) has been named an assistant coach by UMass Head Coach Joanie O?Brien. Moore replaces Craig Dagan who has left UMass after four years as an assistant coach to pursue other professional opportunities.
Moore compiled a 86-84 record in her six year tenure as the head coach at Santa Fe. During the 1997-98 campaign Moore led the Lady Saints to a 20-10 record, a runner-up finish in the Mid Florida Conference Championship, and a berth in the FCCAA State Tournament, her best season on the sidelines at Santa Fe. In her six years she sent seven players on to compete at four year institutions to play basketball. Two of Moore?s players, Faith Halter (1996-97) and Kim Howard (1997-98) were honored with the Sandy Miller Award for academic excellence among Florida junior college women?s basketball players. Moore has been very active in the Gainesville area charities, supporting the America Heart Association, the Shands Hospital and the Special Olympics. ?I am very pleased to have Jackie Moore join our staff here at UMass. She brings a great deal of enthusiasm and basketball knowledge to our program. She is especially eager to make the challenging step up to coaching at the Division I level. I?m incredibly happy to have her joining our staff and am looking forward to the numerous contributions that she can make to our program.? ?I am extremely excited about the opportunity to join the UMass women?s basketball program,? said Moore. ?The chance to work alongside a successful and driven coach like Joanie O?Brien at a great athletic and academic institution like UMass is one I have longed for. I am looking forward to making contributions toward the continued success of the UMass women?s basketball program.? A graduate of Armstrong State College (Ga.), Moore earned a bachelor?s degree in Psychology in 1991. Moore started her collegiate playing career at Santa Fe in 1986, before moving on to Armstrong State where she played from 1988-90. She served as a student assistant coach at Armstrong in 1990-91 while finishing her degree, and then was promoted to a full time assistant coaching position, a post she held until being named head coach at Santa Fe. Moore completed a master?s degree in Health Science from Georgia Southern in 1993. The UMass Minutewomen finished the 1998-99 campaign with a 16-14 overall record and a second place finish in the Atlantic 10 East.
