NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Junior goaltender Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland) made 33 saves to lead the University of Massachusetts to a 4-3 win over the University of Notre Dame in collegiate hockey action Friday night. UMass improves to 4-7-2 on the season, while Notre Dame is now 6-9-2 overall.
UMass started the scoring at 7:19 into the first with the third shorthanded goal of the season by junior forward Jeff Turner (Saginaw, Mich.). Turner took a feed from senior forward Jeff Blanchard (Stouffville, Ont.) near the blue line and walked in on the goal alone. Notre Dame quickly tied the score just 10 seconds later when Jay Kopischke redirected a Sean Seyferth shot in for a power play score. The Minutemen retook the lead on a power play score by sophomore forward Jedd Crumb (Winnipeg, Man.). Turner tipped in a slap shot from the point by junior forward Kris Wallis (Agassiz, B.C.) just over a minute later to give UMass a 2-1 edge. The Irish tied the game at two when Ryan Dolder scored on the power play with 6:37 left in the period. UMass retook a one-goal lead when sophomore defenseman Toni S?derholm (Helsinki, Finland) blasted home a shot from the point.
Wallis gave the Minutemen a two-goal advantage 3:44 into the second frame when he took a feed in front of the Notre Dame goal from junior forward Nick Stephens (Roseville, Minn.) who had sped past an Irish defender on the right side of the ice. Notre Dame pulled back within a goal on a strike by Ben Simon 4:02 into the third period, just seconds after an Irish power play had expired.
Helanen finished with 33 saves, including 20 in the third period, to earn the win, while Tony Zasowski and Jeremiah Kimento combined for 19 saves in the Irish net.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
