UMass Hockey Falls To Notre Dame, 5-3

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Ben Simon scored two goals to lead the University of Notre Dame to a 4-2 win over the University of Massachusetts in collegiate hockey action Saturday night. UMass is now 4-8-2 overall after the weekend split with the Irish, while Notre Dame improves to 7-9-2 on the season.
The Minutemen took an early lead in the contest when freshman defenseman Samuli Jalkanen (Helsinki, Finland) scored his first collegiate goal 1:16 into the first period. Jalkanen fired a shot from the left point that knuckled through the air into the upper right corner of the goal. UMass took a 2-0 lead on the first goal of the season from junior forward Jay Shaw (Jamestown, R.I.) about six minutes later. The Irish cut UMass? lead to one just after the midway point of the period when Evan Nielsen converted a feed from Dan Carlson. Ben Simon tied the game at two with a power play score just over two minutes later before Ryan Dolder gave Notre Dame its first lead of the weekend with a second Irish power play goal with 1:03 left in the first period.
After a scoreless second period, Simon scored the third power play goal of the night for Notre Dame with 8:05 left in regulation to give the Irish a 4-2 edge in the contest. Nathan Borega added an empty-net goal with 1:02 left in regulation. Junior forward Ray Geever (Hanson, Mass.) brought UMass back within two with a shorthanded goal with 13 seconds left in the game.
Sophomore Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) made the start in goal for the Minutemen, making six saves and allowing three goals in one period of action, while junior Markus Helanen (Vanta?, Finland) made 16 saves and allowed one goal in the final two periods. Jeremiah Kimento made 20 saves in the Notre Dame net for the victory.
UMass returns to action on Wednesday, December 29, when it faces No. 9 Northern Michigan in first round action of the Mariucci Classic at the University of Minnesota.
