CINCINNATI, Ohio - The University of Massachusetts opened up an early 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the match, but couldn?t hold on as Xavier scored three second half goals en route to a 3-2 win over the Minutemen on Friday night at Corcoran Field.
Senior forward Adam Black (San Jose, Calif.) started the scoring, taking a through ball from junior Seth Lilburn (Boonton Township, N.J.) and tallying a goal, his 11th of the season, at the :23 mark. Sophomore Fred Kinateder (Waukesha, Wis.) added the second goal for UMass (9-5, 4-2 Atlantic 10) on an assist from freshman Derek Rhodes (DePere, Wis.) at 4:55.
Xavier (4-9-1, 1-5 Atlantic 10), however, dominated the second half. The Musketeers scored just 3:08 into the second half, getting a goal from Koen Kuiken to cut the UMass lead to 2-1. Less than five minutes later, Xavier got the equalizer, as Mike Kelly beat UMass goalkeeper Todd Fowler (Clifton Park, N.Y.) at 53:45. Brian DiBattista then scored the game winner with just over 11 minutes to go to give Xavier the win.
Todd Fowler made four saves in defeat for UMass. The Minutemen will now make their way up I-75 to Dayton to take on the defending Atlantic 10 champion Flyers on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
