AMHERST, Mass. - Junior forward Seth Lilburn (Boonton Township, N.J.) scored the game-winner off a free kick by Jonathan Bibb (London, England) with just under thirty minutes to play, and UMass got goals from junior Patrick Beattie (Mobile, Ala.), sophomore Mike Janusz (Elm Grove, Wis.) and senior Adam Black (San Jose, Calif.), to defeat Virginia Tech 4-2 at Totman Field on Sunday afternoon.
Virginia Tech (6-7, 2-3 Atlantic 10) got on the board first when Ryan Cummins slipped a shot past UMass goalkeeper Todd Fowler (Clifton Park, N.Y.) at the 20-minute mark. Beattie countered for UMass (9-4, 4-1 Atlantic 10) just over 11 minutes later with a spectacular header off of Bibb?s corner kick that found the top left corner of the net. UMass took the lead just over six minutes into the second half when Mike Janusz put a rebound into an empty Hokie net. The lead did not last, though. Six minutes later, Tech?s Greg Nicks sent a ball into the UMass box from near midfield. The ball found its way into the net on the sloppy, rain-soaked turf to tie the game at 2-2.
The Minutemen were awarded a free kick from about twenty yards away when Tech?s Sam Vida was issued a yellow card at 60:52. Three seconds later, Bibb?s free kick found Lilburn?s head, and then the back of the net. Black added the fourth UMass goal just under six minutes later. It was his tenth goal of the season.
Todd Fowler picked up his third win in as many games and made two saves in the victory. Virginia Tech?s Colin Kibler made eight saves in defeat.
The win over the Hokies is the first for UMass in the five games played between the two teams thus far. It is also the 150th coaching victory for Sam Koch. Koch won 58 games at Stanford from 1984-89, and has now won 92 as head coach at UMass. UMass travels to Ohio for their next two matches. On Friday at 7:00 p.m., the Minutemen will take on Xavier at Corcoran Field in Cincinnati. Then on Sunday, UMass will square off with defending Atlantic 10 champion Dayton at 1:00 p.m.
