Jake Lane, currently a defensive analyst and nickels coach for UMass, joined the Minutemen football staff for the 2021-22 season as a student assistant coach.

Lane was named the nickels coach in December of 2024. 

During the 2024 season, Lane was the defensive analyst and assistant corners coach, becoming the youngest Division I FBS analyst at 23 years old. Lane also recruited national high school student-athletes, transfer student-athletes and junior college student-athletes, primarily the Mississippi JUCO region, along with North Carolina and Massachusetts areas. 

Lane was a graduate assistant with the Minutemen for the 2023 season, working mainly with the defensive line and corners. He was named to the Our Coaching Network 30 Under 30 2023 Graduate Assistants list. 

For the 2021 and 2022 seasons, Lane worked primarily with running backs as a student assistant coach.

In addition to his time with the UMass football program, Lane interned as a scouting assistant for the 33rd Team working under Mike Tannenbaum. With the 33rd Team, he wrote reports on NFL draft prospects and worked with former and current NFL personnel on film breakdown, weekly highlights, etc. 

Lane was a walk-on for the UMass football team in 2019, before a health matter ended his college career. 

Lane, a native of Newburyport, Massachusetts, earned his bachelor’s degree in business management from UMass in 2022.
