AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass Sports Radio Network won the Associated Press award for the best radio sports play-by-play in Massachusetts and Rhode Island for 2003, receiving the award at a dinner at the J.F.K. Library in Boston, Saturday night. This was the second straight year and third in four years that UMass Sports Radio was honored.
This year's winning broadcast was a UMass football game on November 1, 2003, against Northeastern. The broadcast team included Bob Behler on play-by-play, Matt Goldstein on color commentary, and Adam Frenier as the studio host and producer.
"It was a great game to call, with the Minutemen rallying for a 28-24 win over Northeastern," said Behler. "Matt really added a lot of insight on color and Adam is just the best at producing games. We brought a great game to life on the radio."
Behler, in his fifth season as "the Voice of the Minutemen," won for the first time with a football broadcast. In 2000 and 2002, he won for basketball with his partner, the late Jack Leaman.
Goldstein, in his first season with UMass Sports Radio, was red-shirting as a kicker on the football team. Most of the season he was the sideline announcer, but for the Northeastern game, he was the color commentator. A junior communications major at UMass, Goldstein is from Phoenix, Ariz.
Frenier, in his second full season with the network, produces the broadcasts from the WRNX studios in Holyoke. He also is heard on the broadcast as the studio host. A senior history major at UMass, Frenier is from Florence, Mass.
