UMass Drops Triple Overtime Thriller At Coastal Carolina, 94-91

CONWAY, S.C. -- The Massachusetts men's basketball team dropped a triple overtime thriller to Coastal Carolina, 94-91, on Saturday afternoon at the HTC Center (1,924) as part of the second round of the 2025-26 MAC-SBC Challenge.
Marcus Banks Jr., who sent the game to a third overtime with a buzzer beater at the end of the second OT, nearly recreated the feat to extend the game again, but his heave was just offline, and the Chanticleers escaped.
K'Jei Parker had a career-best 31 points to lead the Minutemen, while Daniel Hankins-Sanford pulled down a career-high 20 rebounds – the most rebounds in a game for a Minuteman since Jim Town had 27 against Boston College on Dec. 12, 1976. Hankins-Sanford scored 10 points to register his ninth double-double of the year.
Banks Jr. finished with 21 points for the UMass (15-10, 6-6 MAC), while Leonardo Bettiol added 17. Bettiol also grabbed 10 boards for his sixth double-double of the season.
For Coastal Carolina, Rasheed Jones led the team with 26 points, followed by AJ Dancler with 24 and Joshua Beadle with 23. Reggie Hill contributed 11 points and a team-best 13 rebounds on the afternoon .
How It Happened
- Danny Carbuccia, Marcus Banks Jr., Jayden Ndjigue, Leonardo Bettiol, and Daniel Hankins-Sanford started for the Minutemen.
- Banks Jr. picked up where he left off, nailing his first three of the afternoon for a 3-2 UMass lead at 18:45.
- K'Jei Parker checked into the game and hit back-to back threes, pushing the UMass lead to 10-4 at 13:28.
- Hankins-Sanford knocked down a three-pointer to give the Minutemen a five-point lead, 15-10, at 11:58.
- A Parker jumper at 9:37 extended the Minutemen lead to 18-10.
- Parker contributed five points, including a triple to keep UMass ahead, 22-15 with 6:23 on the clock.
- Bettiol added three points down the stretch and the Minutemen took a 32-21 lead to the locker room after 20 minutes of play.
- Bettiol scored back-to-back second-chance layups to give UMass a 36-24 lead early in the second half.
- After a three from Hankins-Sanford, Ndjigue's jumper kept the Minutemen ahead by 12 points, 41-29 at the 15:23 mark.
- Banks Jr. converted back-to-back jumpers from down low and Parker added a jumper from the elbow to keep it a 10-point lead, 47-37, at 12:59 of the second half.
- The Chanticleers went on a 7-2 run to cut the lead to 47-41 at 11:56.
- A tough Bettiol layup and Parker three kept UMass in front 54-46 with eight and a half minutes to play in the second half.
- A three by Coastal's Rasheed Jones cut it to a six-point game, 57-51, at 6:30.
- A tip-in layup from Carbuccia pushed the lead to eight, 59-51, with 4:26 remaining.
- Coastal took a 61-59 lead with 1:37 left on a AJ Dancler jumper.
- With 12 seconds left, Parker hit a game-tying three-pointer with 13 seconds on the clock to make it a 64-64 game and Coastal's Dancler missed his three-pointer to force the first overtime.
- The two teams were tied early in the first overtime, before a Bettiol layup and Carbuccia free throw put UMass ahead, 69-66 at the 2:41 mark.
- Banks Jr., responded to the Chanticleers' three-pointer with one of his own to pull the Minutemen ahead, 72-69 with 1:46 on the clock.
- A second-chance jumper for Parker with 47 seconds left gave UMass a 74-70 lead.
- With only 0.4 seconds on the clock, the Chants' Dancler hit a triple to force a second overtime with a 75-75 tie.
- A jumper by Banks Jr., knotted the game up at 77-77 with 2:39 on the clock, but five straight points gave Coastal Carolina an 82-77 lead at the 1:34 mark in the second overtime.
- A free throw from Parker and a layup by Bettiol cut the Chanticleers lead to two, 82-80, with 14 seconds on the clock.
- Coastal's Jones made one of two shots at the charity stripe to pull ahead by three, but a last second three-pointer by Banks Jr., sent the game to triple overtime at 83-83.
- At the 3:18 mark of triple overtime, Carbuccia cut the deficit to one with Coastal Carolina leading 86-85.
- Two big free throws by Bettiol put UMass within three at 91-88 with 59 seconds remaining.
- Banks Jr., made his fourth three-pointer of the game to tie the game up at 91 apiece, but the Chants' Joshua Beadle made one from beyond the arc with two seconds left to give Coastal Carolina a 94-91 win in triple overtime.
