The Matchup
  • Massachusetts and Coastal Carolina have played in one prior matchup.
  • The teams met on December 30, 1988, at the Florida Today Classic in Melbourne, Florida, where the Minutemen took down the Chanticleers 90-73.
Last Time out
  •  Massachusetts men's basketball (15-9, 6-6 MAC) claimed a 95-89 win against Central Michigan (7-16, 3-8 MAC) on Tuesday night with two Minutemen setting program and career records.
  • Marcus Banks Jr., finished with a career high 37 points going 12-of-17 from the field with 10 three pointers and five steals. Banks Jr.'s 10 three pointers set a program record.
  •  Danny Carbuccia dished out 17 assists for UMass, setting a program record and were the most since Chaz Williams on Dec. 7, 2013, against BYU. Carbuccia's assists tied for second most assists in a Division I men's game this season and marked the most by a D-I freshman since TyTy Washington also totaled 17 assists against Georgia on Jan. 8, 2022.
  • Leonardo Bettiol recorded 22 points going 8-for-11 from the field with five rebounds and two assists. Daniel Hankins-Sanford contributed 19 points, nine rebounds and three steals over the evening. 
Scouting the Chanticleer
  • Coastal Carolina enters the MAC-SBC Challenge on Saturday after a Wednesday night loss at home to Arkansas State, 70-66.
  • Chanticleers Head Coach Justin Gray is in his second season at Coastal Carolina, accumulating a 24-33 (10-21 Sun Belt) overall record during his time in Conway, South Carolina. 
  • Joshua Beadle leads the team in points, averaging 16.3 per game. AJ Dancler follows close behind with 15.2 per game, as Rasheed Jones contributes 14.7 per game. 
  • Reggie Hill (5.7) and Dancler (5.6) lead Coastal Carolina in rebounds per game, with Nadjrick Peat pulling down 5.1 per game. 
  • The Chanticleers are 14-11 overall and 7-6 in the Sun Belt Conference.
Year Four Under Coach Martin
  • Massachusetts basketball enters its fourth season under head coach Frank Martin in 2025-26.
  • Martin and the Minutemen finished the 2024-25 season with 12 wins, including seven in conference play. Under Martin's tutelage guard Rahsool Diggins had a breakout senior season, averaging a team-high 16.8 points on his way to earning All-Atlantic 10 Third Team honors.
  • In 2023-24 Martin led the Minutemen to their best season since 2014, finishing with a 20-11 overall record and securing a top-four seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship.
  • Coach Martin started his time in Amherst by leading the Minutemen to their best record under a first-year head coach since 1996 and the Myrtle Beach Invitational title during the 2022-23 campaign.
  • Martin holds a 349-257 (.576) collegiate coaching mark, picking up 171 of his wins in 10 seasons at South Carolina while recording 117 wins in five seasons at Kansas State.
  • Head coach Frank Martin picked up his 300th collegiate coaching win on Jan. 25, 2023 with a 85-76 win over Richmond.
TIP-OFF TIDBITS
  • Massachusetts' 12 MAC games have been decided by a combined 47 points or a 3.92 points per contest. 
  • Eight of UMass' 12 MAC games have been decided by three points or less (UMass is 4-4 in those eight games).
  • On the season, UMass has played nine games that have been decided by three points or fewer (5-4 in those nine games).
  • UMass head coach Frank Martin, who is in his fourth season at UMass and 19th overall as a head coach, enters Saturday's contest with 349 career wins (including stints at Kansas State, South Carolina and UMass).
  • UMass' +5.4rebounding margin ranks second in the MAC.
  • Massachusetts also ranks third in the MAC in offensive rebounds per game (12.08) and third in rebounds per game (37.00).
  • The Minutemen rank second in the MAC and 24th nationally by averaging 17.8 assists per game. 
  • UMass has held opponents to a 30.7 shooting percentage from three, ranking first in the conference and 52nd in the country. 
  • UMass features four players averaging double figures in points per game, including Leonardo Bettiol (17.6), Marcus Banks Jr. (16.7), Daniel Hankins-Sanford (12.0) and K'Jei Parker (10.8). 
  • Bettiol and Banks Jr., rank sixth and ninth, respectively, in points per game in the MAC. 
  • Bettiol is also shooting 61.0 percent from the field to rank first in the league and 22nd nationally.
  • Bettiol is also averaging 7.8 rebounds per game to rank third in the MAC, while Hankins-Sanford ranks seventh (7.1).
  • In MAC games, Parker has hit 24 of 25 free throw attempts to lead the league (.960).
  • Hankins-Sanford (8) and Bettiol (5) each have multiple double-doubles this season.
  • Hankins-Sanford's eight double-doubles are the second most in the MAC.
