Massachusetts Hockey Secures 4-2 Victory At Merrimack

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey scored twice in the third period to secure a 4-2 victory over Merrimack on Friday night at Lawler Arena. With the win, the Minutemen improve to 11-10-0 on the year, 4-7-0 in Hockey East, while the Warriors drop to 10-11-0 and 4-8-0 in league action.
Moments after a Merrimack penalty expired in the first period, the Warriors went on the attack. Parker Lalonde and Caden Cranston fed the puck ahead to Caelan Fitzpatrick who tucked the puck in behind goaltender Michael Hrabal with a wraparound at the 6:18 mark.
UMass answered 11:59 into the period. Junior Cam O'Neill sent a pass from down low out to sophomore Francesco Dell'Elce at the left point. Dell'Elce's shot was stopped, but junior Owen Mehlenbacher was at the net front to punch in the rebound.
The Minutemen took their first lead at 2:15 of the second period. Junior Bo Cosman sprung Lukas Klecka and Justin Kerr on a 2-on-1 and Klecka send a feed across the slot for Kerr to finish off for his first collegiate goal.
Before the end of the frame, Merrimack managed to tie the score at two. Trevor Hoskin beat Hrabal through a screen on the power play with Cranston and Justin Gill collecting the assists at 18:24.
O'Neill put UMass back in front 2:41 into the third, depositing a Warriors' turnover into their net from in front for his second of the year.
Freshman Jack Galanek added late insurance with an empty net goal in the final minute of play from Dell'Elce and junior Jack Musa.
Merrimack finished with a 31-20 advantage in shots and went 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Minutemen were 0-for-3.
Hrabal totaled 29 saves for UMass and Max Lundgren stopped 16 for the Warriors.
The teams will be back in action tomorrow, January 17, at the Mullins Center at 7 p.m.
