AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey will welcome 6-2, 192-pound forward Owen Mehlenbacher to the squad for the 2025-26 season, head coach Greg Carvel announced on Tuesday. Mehlenbacher, who joins the Minutemen after two seasons at Wisconsin, was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings at No. 201 overall at the 2022 NHL Draft in the seventh round. He joins forward Mikey DeAngelo as the second new addition to the UMass roster for the upcoming season.

"Owen has great size and plays a solid two-way, well-rounded game," said Carvel. "As Owen continues to build strength and become accustomed to our style of play, we project him to be another power forward that will be effective at both ends of the ice. Another high-quality young man that will add to our culture and take big leaps forward as a player that we will help get to the next level."

In two seasons at Wisconsin, Mehlenbacher appeared in 51 games and totaled 10 points on five goals and five assists with one power-play goal and one game winner. The Fort Erie, Ontario native was named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team in 2025-26 and helped the Badgers reach the NCAA Tournament as a freshman in 2024-25 and earned the team's Otto Breitenbach/Curtis Joseph Most Improved Player award.

Prior to playing college hockey, Mehlenbacher captained the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the United States Hockey League (USHL) during 2022-23, before getting traded to the Fargo Force. He totaled 19 goals and 50 points in 57 games between the two teams and added three goals and four points in nine playoff games for Fargo. During the 2021-22 campaign with Muskegon, Mehlenbacher put up 50 points over 65 games on 21 goals and 29 assists and was named to the USHL's All-Academic Team. In his first season with the Lumberjacks in 2020-21, he logged 14 points (8g, 6a) in 50 games.
