#11 Massachusetts Drops Hockey East Opener To Northeastern, 4-2
October 17, 2025 | Hockey
AMHERST, Mass. – No. 11 University of Massachusetts hockey was unable to overcome a two-goal deficit to start the contest, dropping its Hockey East opener to Northeastern, 4-2 on Friday night at the Mullins Center. The setback leaves the Minutemen at 3-1-0 (0-1-0 HE), while the Huskies improve to 2-1-0 (1-0-0 HE).
"Rough first period for us tonight," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "Similar to Stonehill, not a great start, something we'll to take care of, but thought Michael Hrabal was outstanding. He gave us a chance to make the game close. We came out in the second period, the first shift, we were in the zone and buzzing, and then the puck comes to blue line and we get a bad bounce and they get a breakaway. That was tough. The last two periods, I thought we played pretty well, but bottom line is we didn't look like the team that I usually see from UMass, we didn't compete at the level we usually do. If it wasn't for Michael Hrabal, that game's not even close tonight."
Northeastern opened the scoring just 1:49 into the first period. Amine Hajibi collected the puck along the half wall, set it out to Jack Henry at the right point and Griffin Erdman was at the doorstep to direct it home.
The Huskies doubled their advantage at the 1:12 mark of the second period. Joe Connor caused a turnover at the blueline and skated in alone on Hrabal for the score.
Junior Bo Cosman pulled UMass back within one at the 13:09 mark, scoring his first of his career on the rush off a setup by junior Cam O'Neill and senior Lucas Ölvestad.
Northeastern answered shortly after, however. Tyler Fukakusa found Giacomo Martino in alone behind the Minutemen's defense for the partial break at 17:14. Jacob Mathiew earned the secondary helper on the play.
Junior Jack Musa closed the gap to one with his fourth tally of the season, finishing off a feed from sophomores Daniel Jencko and Francesco Dell'Elce at the back post on the power play 8:30 into the third.
The Huskies sealed their win, though, with an empty net goal by Dylan Hryckowian at 19:38.
Northeastern finished the contest with a 33-27 shot advantage and UMass was 1-for-2 on the power play.
Hrabal finished with 29 saves for the Minutemen and Huskies netminder Lawton Zacher stopped 25 shots.
