Massachusetts Tennis Completes Doubleheader Sweep Over Siena and Merrimack

Martina Pavissich earned her first singles victories as a Minutewoman
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts tennis completed a clean sweep over Siena and Merrimack in their doubleheader on Sunday at the Bay Road Tennis Center. UMass completed a 5-2 victory over the Saints, in addition to garnering a 4-0 match atop the Warriors.
Sunday's wins marked the Minutewomen's first of the spring season, hoisting them to a 2-1 record. Notably, freshman Martina Pavissich notched her first singles victories as a Minutewomen in consecutive straight set matches.
UMass kickstarted the day with a dominant performance over Siena. The team of Trinity Calinescu and Martina Pavissich claimed the first victory of the day on court No. 3 in a 6-0 victory over Siena's Zaara Omar and Reegan Mullaney. At No. 2 doubles the duo of Belle Jonglertrakul and Mariana Campino clinched the doubles point by defeating Andrea Vargas and Madeline De Faber of the Warriors 6-2. Amelia Tye and Ella Faessler were up 5-1 in their doubles match on court No. 1 before going unfinished.
In singles play Faessler notched a unanimous 6-0, 6-0 decision on court No. 3 over Siena's Omar, before Calinescu defeated the Bernards' Manuela Gomez 6-4, 7-5 at No. 4 singles. Siena got one back on court No. 1 with Vargas' victory over Jonglertrakul 4-6, 6-4, 2-0 ret. – while at No. 2 singles Tye quickly sounded back to clinch the match, besting Laia Giralt of the Bernards 7-5, 6-4.
Martina Pavissich claimed her first win as a Minutewomen, besting Mullaney 6-3, 6-1 on court No. 5. At No. 6 singles, De Faber bested Owenthu Makhanya 6-4, 6-1– but Siena's efforts proved too little too late, defining the final match score of 5-2 in UMass' favor.
The Minutewomen's success continued into the afternoon against Merrimack, winning all matches played. In doubles action the team of Pavissich and Campino defeated the Warriors' Jordan Phillips and Keona Gutierrez-DeArmond 6-0 on court No. 2. Soon after, Tye and Faessler clinched the doubles point, winning 6-1 at No. 1 doubles over Kiana Thompson and Caitlin McLoughlin. The duo of Calinescu and Makhanya gained the other victory on court No. 3, 6-3.
Tye added the first singles win over Merrimack in a 6-0, 6-0 match atop McLoughlin on court No. 2. Faessler followed closely behind, defeating Thompson 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Newcomer, Pavissich earned her second singles victory of the day in a 6-1, 6-1 match over Phillips on court No. 3 to clinch UMass 4-0 win.
Calinescu was up 6-1, 5-1 in her match at No. 4 singles before going unfinished.
UMass looks ahead to a weekend series at home beginning on Saturday, February 1st versus Holy Cross and concluding on Sunday, February 2nd against Fairfield. Both matches begin at 11 a.m. at the Bay Road Tennis Center.
