Weir Named Baseball Assistant Coach

Max Weir joins the staff for the 2024-25 season for his second stint with the Minutemen.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball head coach Matt Reynolds has announced the hiring of Max Weir as an assistant coach. Weir returns to UMass for his second stint from Nichols College where he spent a season as the associate head coach.
"We are very excited to welcome back Max to the staff," said Reynolds. "He was the first person I thought of when Coach Royer told me that he would be moving on. Max did a great job here as the volunteer coach a year ago and with the experience he gained as Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Nichols College, I believe that he will step in and excel in his new role with us."
While at Nichols, Weir helped the Bison to a 29-13 overall record and a 9-5 record in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC). During the season, Weir called the plays for the offense, which achieved a .324 / .437 / .475 slash line, averaged 8.9 runs per game and set the single-season record for home runs, stolen bases and runs batted in. Nichols recorded three six-plus game-winning streaks on their way to the most wins in program history in the regular season, with the team earning the No. 4 seed in the CCC Tournament.
Weir guided two All-Americans, the CCC Player of the Year, the D3Baseball.com's All-Region II Player of the Year, the ABCA/Rawlings Position Player of the Year for Region II and the 2024 ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove award honoree. He also mentored six Bison to CCC First and Second Team selections, three to D3Baseball.com's First and Third Team honors, one to a Third Team nod in the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region II list and five to the CSC Academic All-District Team.
Previously, Weir had a one-year stint on the UMass baseball staff as the volunteer assistant coach for the 2022-23 season. He primarily worked with catchers and hitters.
Before coming to Amherst, Weir was the head development team coach at Gardner-Webb. As the junior varsity head coach, he spent time recruiting, creating practice and game schedules, coordinating meals and team travel, creating and monitoring team budgets and worked closely with compliance. In addition, he also assisted the Division I varsity program with player development, recruiting, fundraising and other administrative duties.
During his time at Gardner-Webb, Weir also shared his time with Powerhouse Training, in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, as the assistant general manager and baseball coach. There, he helped with a multitude of tasks, such as developing plans for the outfielders and hitters, communicating with all players and families, as well as setting individual meetings with each athlete, to aid in the college recruiting process, and designed and ordered uniforms, apparel and equipment.
Prior to Gardner-Webb and Powerhouse Training, Weir was the assistant baseball coach at American International College for four years. At AIC, he assisted with player development, designing practice plans, coaching outfielders, recruiting, scouting and game planning. He also coordinated all team travel, meals, budget and aided with team fundraising. Weir guided outfielder Josh Aviles to the programs first ever National Division II Rawlings Gold Glove Award, as well.
Additionally, Weir spent a season with the Boston Red Sox with the Fan and Youth Engagement team, aiding with various public and private events in New England, as well as Fenway Park to enhance fans experience. He also helped with the marketing and promotional aspects, such as ticket initiatives, tabling at partnered events and executing large-scale events.
