#13 Women’s Hoops Falls To #5 Duquesne In A-10 Second Round

HENRICO, Va. – The University of Massachusetts women's basketball team fell to Duquesne in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Championship on Thursday at the Henrico Sports and Events Center, 81-57. Stefanie Kulesza and Kristin Williams each finished with 11 points to lead UMass while Alexsia Rose chipped in nine.
The Minutewomen scored four straight to open the game on a 4-0 run, capped off by a Williams mid-range jumper. UMass forced the Dukes into four turnovers in the first four possessions as Duquesne finished the quarter with nine turnovers. Lilly Taulelei put UMass ahead 8-3 on a jumper off a Williams assist before a 16-0 Duquesne run saw the Dukes go ahead 19-8 with 2:27 to go in the first. The Dukes shot 58-percent from the field in the first and took a 21-10 lead into the break.
Tori Hyduke knocked down a 3-pointer with just under four to go in the second as part of a 6-0 run to make it 29-22 in favor of Duquesne. The triple cut the Dukes' lead down to single digits for the first time since the 13-second mark in the first. Duquesne went into the halftime break with a 39-26 lead and outrebounded the Minutewomen 23-11 in the first 20 minutes.
Rose connected with Williams on a 3-pointer near the five-minute mark of the third to trim the Duquesne advantage back to 10 points at 48-38. The Minutewomen made four straight shots from the field after a Hyduke layup made it a 48-40 game. Duquesne followed with a 5-0 run to go ahead by 13 and went into the fourth with a 60-45 advantage.
The Dukes put together a 10-2 run to open the fourth quarter before a Bre Bellamy 3-pointer brought the score to 70-52. Duquesne finished the game on an 11-5 spurt to make it an 81-57 final.
