Cam O'Neill vs. Maine

#11 Massachusetts Hockey Nipped By #6/5 Maine, 1-0

February 03, 2024 | Hockey

AMHERST, Mass. – No. 11 University of Massachusetts hockey dropped a tight contest to No. 6/5 Maine on Saturday evening at the Mullins Center by a 1-0 margin as the lone marker came less than two minutes into the action. With the setback, the Minutemen are now 14-7-3 overall, 7-5-2 in Hockey East, while the Black Bears improve to 17-5-2, 9-4-1 in league action.

"We made a mistake early and gave them the odd-man rush that they finished and then I didn't think that would be the only goal of the game, and it shouldn't have been," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "I thought we created a lot of offense, but just couldn't finish. Our power play needed to be more effective tonight. I thought Maine did an outstanding job on the penalty kill, but to me it was a good hockey game, we just played a good hockey team. We created enough chances to score more than one or two goals, but unfortunately we couldn't put the puck in the net."

Maine struck early to put the Minutemen down 1-0. Brandon Holt chipped the puck to Donavan Villeneuve-Houle and he sprung Brandon Chabrier on a 2-on-1 for the tally at the 1:16 mark.

UMass appeared to have tied things up 3:31 into the second period when freshman Cam O'Neill found Michael Cameron at the back post for a tap in, but the goal went to video review and was called back for offsides.

The Chabrier tally would stand up as the only scoring of the night as Maine out-shot UMass, 22-15. On special teams, the Minutemen were 0-for-3 with the man advantage and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill.

Michael Hrabal finished with 21 saves for UMass and Albin Boija stopped all 15 he faced for the Black Bears.

The Minutemen will be back in action next Friday, February 9, when the squad will travel to Storrs, Conn. to face UConn at 7 p.m.
