#20 Massachusetts Hockey Nipped By #10/9 Providence, 2-1
November 14, 2024 | Hockey
AMHERST, Mass. – No. 20 University of Massachusetts hockey opened the scoring, but two unanswered tallies from No. 10/9 Providence led to a 2-1 setback for the Minutemen at the Mullins Center on Thursday night. The loss leaves UMass at 4-5-2 overall and 0-3-2 in Hockey East, while the Friars improve to 7-1-2 and 5-0-2 in league action.
"I want to praise Jackson Irving for his first career start," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "I thought he was outstanding and gave us really solid goaltending. I didn't like our first 20 minutes and I didn't think we were ready to play. I didn't mind our last 40 minutes. But the biggest issue for us right now is scoring. We haven't had a goal from our top nine forwards in three games in a row here, so we've got to get that figured out. I think that will help our cause. Jackson provided stability for us back there. I'm very, very happy for him. Another game, just like last weekend, where I thought we were going to dig ourselves out of the hole and find a way to come back, but too little too late."
UMass found the back of the net just 1:19 into the contest as junior Cole O'Hara intercepted the puck along the half wall and centered it to sophomore Aydar Suniev in the slot who opted to pass to freshman Larry Keenan at the right point who finished the play with his first collegiate goal.
The Friars tied things up at 1-1 at the 7:40 mark of the first as Graham Gamache and Guillaume cycled the puck to Ryan O'Reilly which found its way under Irving from the top of the left faceoff circle.
Providence pulled in front 4:03 into the second period, capitalizing on a power play opportunity. Hudson Malinoski and Andrew Centrella set up a one-timer that Logan Sawyer tucked under the cross bar from the right faceoff dot.
That proved to be all the scoring in the contest as the third period featured several chances but no goals and no penalties for either side.
The Friars ended the night with a 28-26 edge in shots on goal and went 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Minutemen were 0-for-2.
In his first collegiate start, Irving put up 26 saves and Svedebäck totaled 25 stops for Providence.
The teams will be back in action on Saturday, November 16 in Providence, R.I., squaring off at Schneider Arena at 6 p.m.
