AMHERST, Mass. – Emmy Award-winning NHL broadcaster Pierre McGuire will be joining the UMass Sports Network for select games this season, beginning with this Thursday's Hockey East matchup between No. 20 Massachusetts hockey and No. 10/9 Providence at the Mullins Center.

"Pierre recruited me to go to Saint Lawrence," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "We quickly built a strong friendship. He coached me for just one year and then he moved on and won Stanley Cups. We've always remained close, when we were in the NHL we would spend a lot of time together and cross paths. He's one of the smartest hockey people going and he's got a memory of every single player and where they played and who they played for and what they did and it's really impressive. He's a really smart hockey person and I know a lot of GMs call him for advice. He's a unique and special hockey mind."

McGuire has served as NBC Sports Group's lead NHL 'Inside-the-Glass' analyst and a game analyst for TSN Canada's national NHL broadcasts. In 2013, McGuire won the Sports Emmy for Outstanding Sports Personality – Sports Reporter. In addition to his work on TSN's NHL coverage, McGuire provided analysis for TSN's coverage of the IIHF World Junior Championship and NHL Entry Draft and for NBC Sports' coverage at six Olympic Games.

Prior to his radio and television career, McGuire had a long and successful coaching career, highlighted by his role as an assistant coach and scout with the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he was part of the organization's back-to-back Stanley Cup titles in 1991 and 1992. McGuire also served as head coach of the Hartford Whalers, as well as a scout and assistant coach with the Ottawa Senators. His first coaching job was as an assistant at Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y. Over the next several years, McGuire coached at Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. He was selected eight times by The Hockey News as one of the game's 100 most powerful and influential people.
