Jim McCoy Selected For Induction In Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame
January 12, 2024 | Men's Basketball
PITTSBURGH, PA. -- Massachusetts basketball alumni and hall of famer Jim McCoy has been selected for induction in the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, the Robert "Tick" Cloherty Western Chapter announced. McCoy was one of 10 selected to the class of 2024, joining fellow college basketball legends Bruce Atkins (Duquesne) and Darelle Porter (Pitt).
McCoy was a key contributor in four of the most successful individual seasons in Massachusetts program history from 1988-89 through 1991-92. He ended his time in Amherst as the program's all-time leading scorer with 2,374 points, nearly 200 more than the next player in the team record book. McCoy, who led UMass in scoring during each of his four years, won four Atlantic 10 All-Conference awards, including first-team selection in his sophomore, junior and senior campaigns. McCoy was a catalyst for then-head coach John Calipari, turning the Minutemen into a national contender, as the squad improved from an eighth-place finish in the A-10 to reaching the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and winning 30 games during his senior season.
In addition to ranking tops in program history for points, McCoy is also the all-time leader in field goals made (876) and field goals attempted (2,013), while sitting second in free throws made (575), free throws attempted (810), games started (121) and minutes played (4180). Following his tenure in Western Massachusetts, McCoy went on to play internationally in Sweden and Spain.
"In the class of 2024, we are recognizing another absolutely outstanding group of individuals who have played a major role in the Western PA sports world as players, coaches, administrators, and luminaries," stated Jack Teitz, President.
As the largest of the 30 statewide chapters that comprise the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, our primary mission is to honor notable sports contributors in our Western Pennsylvania Region, and we provide funding for youth sports programs in conjunction with various local foundations.
