ALBANY, N.Y. – Graduate student Emilie Keij converted on a penalty corner in the 72nd minute to help University of Massachusetts field hockey to a season-opening double overtime victory over No. 19 UAlbany at Alumni Turf on Friday afternoon.
The teams played a scoreless first half with the Minutewomen holding a 6-2 advantage at the break and each side with one corner apiece.
Junior Dempsey Campbell then opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with a bounding shot that looped high over Great Danes goalkeeper Lara Behn to put UMass on the board.
The Minutewomen then doubled their advantage when freshman Kristy Leonard drove to the cage to collect her first collegiate tally at the 37:36 mark, set up by sophomore Mia Smith.
Just over two minutes later, Charlotte Triggs halved the deficit for UAlbany and added her second of the day in the 59th minute to force overtime.
After the squads each had one attempt on target in the opening extra frame, Keij sent the ball into the far corner for the Great Danes' goal in the 72nd minute.
UMass ended the contest with a 12-9 advantage in shots (7-4 in shots on goal), while UAlbany held the edge in penalty corners, 5-2. Myrte van Herwijnen logged two saves for the Minutewomen.
