Three Minutewomen Named Preseason All-Conference Selections

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts field hockey student-athletes Jess Beech, Mali Herberhold and Myrte van Herwijnen were named to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference Team, the league announced Tuesday.
The Minutewomen also finished second in the 2023 A-10 Field Hockey Preseason Poll, placing just behind the 2022 conference champion St. Joseph's Hawks.
Beech, a graduate student, receives the selection after starting in 19 of 20 games during the 2023 campaign. The midfielder recorded 8 goals and 3 assists for 19 total points. The Marlow, England native was a National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Third Team All-American and a A-10 First Team All-Conference selection in 2022.

Herberhold, earns selection after a 2022 season which saw her named the A-10 Rookie of the Year and an A-10 All-Rookie team selection. The sophomore midfielder comes into 2023 after playing in all 20 games last season totaling seven goals and nine assists.
Van Herwijnen comes into the 2023 season after starting in all 20 games a season ago, recording a 1.605 goals against average and a conference-best .733 save percentage. She recorded 85 saves on 200 shots faced and posted three total shutouts on the season. The sophomore was a A-10 First-Team and NFHCA All-Region selection in 2022.
St. Joe's was picked to win the league's regular season title with 62 points and 6 first place votes. Behind Massachusetts (54, one first place vote) was VCU (46, one first place vote), Lock Haven (38), and Richmond (36), earning the No. 3 through No. 5 spots. La Salle (26), Davidson (13) and Saint Louis (13) rounded out the poll as No. 6 through No. 8, respectively.
The Minutewomen open up the 2023 season on the road as they travel to UAlbany on Friday, Aug. 25 at 2 p.m. and Quinnipiac on Sunday, Aug. 27 at 1 p.m.
