AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey has signed 6-6, 209-pound left-catch goaltender Michael Hrabal to a National Letter of Intent, head coach Greg Carvel announced on Tuesday. Hrabal will join Dans Locmelis, Jack Musa, Cameron O'Neill, Aydar Suniev and Nicholas VanTassell as the sixth member of the Minutemen's incoming freshman class for 2023-24. The Prague, Czechia native was ranked second among North American goalies in the final NHL Central Scouting rankings ahead of the 2023 NHL Draft.
"Michael is a very talented goalie who combines size and athleticism with a tremendous work ethic," said Carvel. "He has performed well on the international stage for the Czech National team and had a great development season last year in the USHL. We are very excited to have him join our incoming class for the upcoming season."
Hrabal is ranked in the top-50 prospects for the upcoming 2023 NHL Entry Draft by a host of media outlets including coming in at No. 26 on TSN/Craig Button's list and No. 32 by McKeen's Hockey and TSN/Bob McKenzie. The netminder spent the 2022-23 season in the United States Hockey League (USHL) playing for the Omaha Lancers. With the Lancers, Hrabal appeared in 31 games and posted a 2.86 goals against average and a .908 save percentage while being named to the USHL All-Rookie Team.
In international competition for his native Czechia, Hrabal registered a 3.11 GAA and a .920 save percentage at the 2023 U-18 World Hockey Championship and was named one of Czechia's top-3 players of the tournament. At the Hlinka Gretzy Cup in 2022, he had a 2.73 GAA and a .917 save percentage over four contests.
