BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The No. 13-seed University of Massachusetts men's basketball team fell to the No. 12-seeded Richmond Spiders, 71-38, on Tuesday afternoon at the Barclay's Center in the opening game of the Atlantic 10 Championship.
Richmond (15-17 Overall, 7-11 A-10) built a 31-18 halftime advantage over the Minutemen (15-16 Overall, 6-12 A-10) and with the win will play No. 5 seed George Mason on Wednesday.
"Lot of credit to Tyler Burton and Richmond," said head coach Frank Martin. "My thoughts go out to Chris [Mooney], who's one of the really good coaches and people in our business and what he is battling right now. Happy for them they get to continue to play and equally disappointed in not just our performance today but in the fact that the season is over. Year ones are complicated, year ones are a discovery finding dal as everyone tries to understand each other and it becomes a rollercoaster at times."
Atlantic 10 All-Rookie honoree RJ Luis was UMass' top scorer with 12 points, while Tyler Burton had 28 points to lead the Spiders. Luis and Matt Cross totaled eight rebounds apiece.
