Rowing Opens Season With Competitive Races Against Boston College And Rhode Island

March 31, 2023 | Rowing

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I . – University of Massachusetts rowing opened the 2023 spring season at Rhode Island on Friday.

Competing with A-10 rival Rhode Island and ACC foe Boston College, the teams put together a series of highly competitive races under fantastic weather conditions with the Minutewomen finishing second in the Varsity 8, just 3.08 seconds behind URI.

No more than three seconds separated the teams in all three point-scoring boats, making for an exciting opening day.

Originally slated to open the season on Saturday, April 1 at the Doc Hosea Regatta in Camden, N.J., impending weather forced the teams to pivot and meet in Rhode Island.
"It was great to get one day of racing under our belts and I would like to thank the entire URI staff for their efforts to make this race happen," said head coach Eric Carcich. "We went out today and raced hard, flashing some good base speed across the board and we found some joy racing 2k again. It was fun to see these three programs produce some very close, very competitive early season racing. We're excited about where we are but even more excited about where we are going. Can't wait!"
