Setting the Scene
University of Massachusetts baseball returns to the diamond for its season opener on Sunday, February 26, to take on Central Connecticut State at the CCSU Baseball Field in New Britain, Connecticut. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
The Minutemen finished the 2022 season with an overall record of 22-26-1, including an 8-16 mark in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
All-Time vs. Central Connecticut State
The Minutemen and Blue Devils will meet for the 40th time in program history, since their first meeting on April 19, 1988, when Central Connecticut earned a 10-9 win. The two programs last met on March 9, 2021, as the Blue Devils took down the Minutemen in a close 8-6 victory.
Massachusetts last win over Central Connecticut State occurred on March 2, 2019, in 1-0, 11-inning contest.
Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2023 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 140th season. Twenty-one members of the team are back from the 2022 campaign, while eight players join for their first season in Amherst, including nine freshman, one sophomore and four transfers.
Keeping it in the Family
The 2023 season marks the 57th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Sixth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).
This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.
On Deck
The Minutemen travel to Annapolis, Maryland, to face Navy for a three-game series on Saturday, March 4 through Sunday, March 5. Saturday's doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. start, with the second game following. First pitch on Sunday will be at 1 p.m.
