Twelve Straight As Women’s Basketball Downs Davidson, 78-64

Breen posts double-double as Minutewomen extends program-record winning streak.
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts women's basketball team extended its program-record winning streak to 12 games on Sunday afternoon with a 78-64 triumph over Davidson at the Mullins Center, presented by UMassFive College Credit Union. The win also marks the fifth straight for UMass at home.
UMass improves to 23-4 on the year, including 13-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while Davidson falls to 12-14 overall and a 5-7 mark in the league.
Sam Breen led the Minutewomen with her 15th double-double of the season, 55th of her career, with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Breen added four assists, two steals and two blocks on the day. Sydney Taylor, who competed in her 100th career game, followed close behind with 20 points of her own, while Ber'Nyah Mayo and Angelique Ngalakulondi collected 11 points apiece. Destiney Philoxy dished out a team-leading seven dimes and Ngalakulondi had a game-high three blocks.
The Minutewomen shot 51.7 percent (30-for-58) from the field, including 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from beyond the arc, and had a 78.6 free throw percentage, sinking 11 of their 14 attempts. Massachusetts also edged out Davidson in rebounds, 33-30.
UMass opened the scoring with a layup from Taylor, before two made free throws by Taylor put the Minutewomen up, 4-2. Davidson grabbed seven points to Massachusetts' four to claim a 9-8 lead. The Minutewomen went on a 16-6 run to close out the first quarter, pulling ahead 24-15.
Massachusetts continued its run well into the second quarter, making it 25-9 over 11 minutes and 25 seconds, capped by a triple from Breen to lead 33-18 at the 4:55 mark. The two teams traded six points apiece, before UMass added two more to extend its lead to 41-24. The Wildcats hit a three-pointer at the buzzer, ending the half at 41-27, in favor of the Minutewomen.
A 19-9 run that elapsed for six minutes and 11 seconds in the third quarter, aided Massachusetts to a 24-point lead at 60-36 at the 3:49 mark. Davidson went on a small 7-4 run, but the Minutewomen held on to a 64-43 lead heading into the final frame.
In the fourth, UMass edged out Davidson, 12-11 with 4:06 remaining on the clock, to lead 76-54. The Wildcats started a 10-2 run of their own, but the Minutewomen kept their lead to win 78-64.
Massachusetts travel to Saint Louis, Missouri, on Wednesday, February 22, for an 8 p.m./7 p.m CT matchup with the Saint Louis Billikens on ESPN+.
