Dominant Team Effort Guides Women’s Basketball Past George Mason, 78-57, For 10th Consecutive Win

FAIRFAX, Va. University of Massachusetts women's basketball opened the game with a 19-2 run in the first 7:39 of play as UMass garnered its 10th consecutive win over George Mason, 78-57, on Sunday afternoon at the EagleBank Arena. Graduate student Sam Breen and senior Sydney Taylor led the effort with 21 points apiece, while Breen tallied 14 rebounds for her 14th double-double of the season and 53rd of her career.
 
UMass improved to 21-4 overall and 11-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while George Mason dropped to 12-14 overall and 5-8 in the league. Massachusetts 11th conference win ties the second most wins in the A-10 in program history. 
 
In addition to Breen and Taylor, Ber'Nyah Mayo put up 18 points and added six rebounds on the day. Breen and Mayo led the team with five assists each, while Destiney Philoxy followed with four. Mayo, Makennah White and Laila Fair all had two swipes apiece.
 
Massachusetts outrebounded George Mason, 44-36, on the afternoon.  
 
George Mason opened the scoring with a layup to take an early 2-0 lead, before Philoxy answered with a layup of her own to knot the score up. Philoxy's basket began a 19-2 run, elapsing seven minutes and 39 seconds, pulling UMass ahead 19-4 to end the first quarter. Mayo put up eight of the team's 19 points in the quarter.
 
Massachusetts continued its run well into the second, extending it to a 25-8 run, capped by a layup from Mayo at the 5:42 mark. A small 5-0 run allowed the Patriots to get within 10 points, but a 12-4 run aided the Minutewomen to an 18-point lead, entering halftime with a score of 37-19.
 
A 12-6 run for UMass extended its lead to 49-25 with 5:02 remaining in the third quarter. The two teams traded nine points apiece, with the Minutewomen holding a 24-point lead at 58-34. Massachusetts went on a small 5-2 run, ending with a three-pointer from Taylor, giving UMass a 27-point lead, its largest of the contest at 63-36. George Mason made two free throws in the final two seconds of the third, heading into the fourth.
 
George Mason went on a 10-4 run in the final frame, but Taylor's fifth triple of the night pushed UMass ahead, 70-48, at the 5:40 mark. The Patriots put up nine more points in the fourth, while the Minutewomen scored eight, allowing UMass to earn a 78-57 triumph over George Mason.
 
Massachusetts travels to Kingston, Rhode Island, on Thursday, February 16, for a matchup with Rhode Island at the Thomas M. Ryan Center. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
