Gervasi, Lints and Skagerlind named captains for the 2024 season.
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts baseball head coach Matt Reynolds has announced that graduate students Mike Gervasi and Renn Lints, and senior Keving Skagerlind have been named captains for the 2024 season. The captains were selected by a vote of their teammates.
In the 2023 season, Gervasi started in 25 of 33 games, primarily as a designated hitter. He finished the year with a .216 batting average and a .968 fielding percentage, registering 21 hits on six doubles and a home run. Gervasi also tallied 11 runs and 13 RBI in 97 at bats, while recording 27 putouts and three assists behind the dish. The Rockland, Massachusetts, native hit his solo homer at Penn (3/17) to lift the Minutemen to a 1-0 victory. Gervasi went 3-for-5, including a double, with two runs and two RBI in game two at Navy (3/4).
"I am extremely honored to be named one of the three captains," said Gervasi. "It means a lot coming from the coaches and my teammates to be selected. I can't wait to lead this team with Renn and Skags to work towards our goal of an A-10 Championship."
Lints appeared in 18 games, earning the start in one, in his first season as a Minuteman. He had one save to go along with a 1-1 record and posted an ERA of 5.13. The Norwalk, Connecticut, native, dealt 21 strikeouts in 33.1 innings pitched, with a career-high four against Davidson (4/7). Lints pitched a season-best 3.1 innings in his first game with UMass at UNC Asheville (3/10) and secured his first winning decision in a tight 10-8 contest at Sacred Heart (4/19).
"It is an honor to be voted a captain by my teammates and coaches and it is not something that I take lightly," said Lints. "I have very high expectations for this team and the UMass baseball program this upcoming season and I am excited to be able to set this standard. My biggest goal is to leave this program in a better place than when I found it and help every one of my teammates become the best players and people that they can be."
Skagerlind earned the start in 37 of 39 contests, finishing the season with a .226 batting average and a .981 fielding percentage. He totaled 31 hits, six doubles, 28 runs and 17 RBI in 137 at bats. The Holden, Massachusetts, native recorded a career-high two doubles, while driving in a season-best three RBI against Dayton (5/19) and completed the season with an eight-game hitting streak, while holding a nine-game reached base streak. In the outfield, Skagerlind registered 266 putouts and one assist.
"I am honored to be a leader in a program such as UMass, with such an important history," said Skagerlind. "This program has produced many great baseball players and people and I couldn't be happier."
